A Bit Of Jazz
With Jaco Pastorious
Jaco Pastorius has been credited with changing the way the electric bass was played, and his individual style is on display in his first album as a band leader.
Jaco Pastorius opens with a stripped-down take on Charlie Parker's 'Donna Lee', showcasing Pastorius' frenetic bass playing and forays into the higher register, backed by the congas of Don Alias. The track acts as an introduction to the aspects of Pastorius' playing which set him apart from the bassists which had come before him.

'Come On, Come Over' reunites the soul duo Sam & Dave on a funky dance track. The horn section, featuring heavyweight players Michael Brecker and David Sanborn, blasts the track into life, with Pastorius throwing a funky bass line which would not have been out of place on the concurrent work of James Brown or any of the P-Funk groups. Aided by the clavinet work of Herbie Hancock, the track is full of energy and dynamicism, and establishes from the first two tracks that Jaco Pastorius is a record of diverging styles.
The first cut solely penned by Pastorius, 'Continuum' uses an atmospheric, high register bass line, which shifts tempo and dominates the track. The focus is so much on the bass, that the Fender Rhodes work of Hancock and Alex Darqui, plus the understated rhythm work of Lenny White on drums and Don Alias on bells simply provide a gentle accompaniment, and add only the occasional flourish to the track

Addicted

Addicted is the twelfth studio album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend, and the second of four albums in The Devin Townsend Project series. The album was released on November 17, 2009 on Townsend's independent record label HevyDevy Records. The album was written and produced by Townsend, and features Ryan Van Poederooyen, Brian Waddell, Mark Cimino, and Anneke van Giersbergen.

According to Townsend, Addicted is an album of "melodic" and "danceable" music but is "much heavier" than his previous albums. Townsend has compared the album's songwriting to his more accessible songs, such as "Life" from Ocean Machine: Biomech (1997), "Stagnant" from Terria (2001), and "Material" from Physicist (2000). The album's production style was directly influenced by Nickelback's 2008 album Dark Horse. Townsend has quipped that "Some parts of it sound likeMeshuggah, some parts of it sound like Boney M. Addicted includes a new version of the song "Hyperdrive" from Townsend's 2007 album Ziltoid the Omniscient with lead vocals by van Giersbergen, who has performed a cover of the song with her current band Agua de Annique. "Resolve" was "directly influenced by The Wildhearts" and it bears a resemblance to "Vainilla Radio" from The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed Unlike. Townsend's previous albums, which were usually in open C tuning, most of the songs on Addicted were played in open B tuning. "Universe in a Ball" was played in open B, "Hyperdrive" in open C♯ (to accommodate the vocal range of van Giersbergen, as opposed to the version of "Hyperdrive" that appeared on the album Ziltoid The Omniscient which was recorded in a different key), and "The Way Home" in open C.

Diablo swing Orchestra

Sing-Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious

This Swedish group combines swing and hot jazz in a '30s style with metal and operatic female vocals, with the results being quite compellingly weird, though decidedly not for everyone. Their instrumentation -- guitar, trumpet, keyboards, bass, cello, drums, and dual male-and-female vocals -- allows for a fair amount of energy and style-hopping, but the songs always work as songs rather than as mere displays of instrumental/vocal technique (though it must be said that Annlouice Wolgers has an astonishing voice), and their thrashy riffs have a groove that'll get any moshpit moving.
